Mercedes has finally divulged the official details on the SL65 AMG Black Series, and it’s even more impressive than our spy reports indicated.

AMG engineers took the SL65 AMG—already a ridiculously fast car—and began removing weight. First they removed the heavy mechanism for the folding hardtop and replaced it with a fixed roof that cuts a flatter line across the car. The front splitter, hood, trunklid, and rear spoiler are all made of carbon fiber to further trim weight. Overall, Mercedes says curb weight is down 550 pounds versus the SL65, to around 4000.

Power comes from the same twin-turbo 6.0-liter V-12 engine as the regular SL65, but with a heavy dose of adrenaline. That engine already produces 604 horsepower, but AMG saw fit to endow the Black Series with 661 horses at 5400 rpm. Torque output is unchanged at 738 pound-feet, although Mercedes says the engine is detuned from 885, likely to keep the heavy-duty five-speed automatic transmission alive. The Black Series’ transmission, however, adds a fourth transmission setting, M2 manual mode, which shifts a claimed 25 percent quicker than M1 mode. As before, there are also Comfort and Sport settings for the automatic modes.

The concept parade at Mazda shows no signs of ending with the Kazamai crossover to be shown at the Moscow auto show August 26.

This is number six in a series that started with the Nagare at the 2006 L.A. auto show and evolved with the Ryuga, Hakaze, Taiki, and the Furai, with designs representing such things as rippling water.

In the case of this latest compact crossover concept, Kazamai means “swirling crosswinds” in Japanese, and the car’s panel lines are described as being inspired by crosswinds in nature. More down to earth, the car also has a five-point grille, accentuated front-wheel arches over 22-inch wheels, and a sleek roof line.

2010 Lotus Evora - Car News

Lotus has released full information and photos of its latest sports car, the Evora. Previously known only by its "Eagle” code name, the car was revealed at the British auto show.

The Evora will be positioned above the Elise and Exige S models and, like the not-for-the-U.S. Europa, aims to provide increased day-to-day usability, which means it should be no harder to get in and out of than a Corvette, with a low, flat door sill. Think Porsche Cayman as opposed to all-out track toy: the Evora will carry more creature comforts and be larger (although that’s a relative term) than the Elise and Exige in an attempt to help attract new customers to the Lotus brand.

The basic structure is similar to every other modern Lotus: mid-engine, lightweight—the Evora prototype weighs 2976 pounds—and smaller than most everything else on the road. Like the Europa, the Evora has a sloped rear window and a fixed roof, although a convertible will arrive at a later date, and Lotus hints at further variants.

2009 Detroit Auto Show

Forget all those bad things you read about Detroit these days. The 2009 Detroit Auto Show will be the biggest and best auto show next year. There will be more world premieres of production vehicles and concept cars than Tokyo and Frankfurt combined. Maybe that's why it's officially called the North American International Auto Show. Yes, it's that big.

Unlike last year's display of old-school horsepower, the 2009 Detroit Auto Show is expected to have a more forward-looking theme. A big part of that will be the introduction of the 2010 Toyota Prius. It's been fully redesigned for even better mileage than before and it will be joined by a new Lexus hybrid sedan counterpart. Other notable debuts include the 2009 Audi R8 V10, 2010 Ford Taurus, 2010 Lincoln MKT crossover and 2009 Mini Cooper Convertible. Full coverage starts here January 10.

2009 Acura TSX: bells and whistles, but no charisma

If we accept that there is something interesting about every car, then the 2009 Acu ra TSX tests this proposition to the breaking point. Is it well made? Are mOprah's diamond earrings real? Of course, it's well made. It's a lux'ed-up, Euro-spec Honda Accord, re-badged as an Acura and aimed at America's young and upwardly mobile petit-bourgeoisie, assuming we have any left.

Is it well equipped? Like a Chippendales show. Acura has always employed the irresistible logic of more is better. The TSX (starting at $28,960) comes standard with a big, beautiful navigation system, heated leather seats, a moonroof and plenty of other upmarket swirlies. Acura simply refuses to yield the value equation. If one of its competitors offered a device to allow telepathic communication with small rodents, you can be sure that the TSX would offer Acura's HamsterLink technology, and it would come standard with the nav system.

The 2.4-litre gasoline engine has been developed specifically for use in Toyota's hybrid systems and features a high-expansion ratio cycle that raises efficiency and reduces friction.

SLR McLaren Roadster even more exclusive and individual? Brabus proves that the topless Mercedes supercar can be made even sportier and more exciting with its sophisticated customization program.

To give the two-seater even more striking looks while at the same time minimizing lift on the front axle, the Brabus designers have developed a front spoiler that attaches to the production bumper. The spoiler is made from exposed carbon fiber and its shape was fine-tuned in the wind tunnel. It is especially lightweight and extremely tough. A corresponding Brabus rear diffuser made from exposed carbon fiber can replace its production counterpart.

The sporty Brabus outfit for the SLR Roadster is dominated by Brabus Monoblock VI 20-inch wheels that fill the wheel houses perfectly. The fully polished multi-piece wheels feature six double spokes and are mounted on the sports car in size 9.5Jx20 in front and size 11.5Jx20 on the rear axle. High-performance tires in sizes 255/30 ZR 20 and 305/25 ZR 20 are supplied by Brabus technology partners Pirelli and Yokohama. This low-profile tire/wheel combination is custom-tailored for the SLR coupe and roadster and benefits not only the car’s appearance but also its handling.

Thus equipped the topless SLR is ready for some additional power provided by Brabus engine tuning. The power tuning for the supercharged 5.5-liter engine consists of special camshafts, a fuel cooling system and a high-performance exhaust. With Brabus tuning, power output of the V8 compressor engine increases by 23 hp to 641 hp at 6500 rpm.

Brabus also offers a special clutch-type limited-slip differential with a locking rate of 40 percent. It further optimizes traction and improves acceleration performance of the super sports car. The tuned roadster sprints to 60 mph in just 3.5 seconds and reaches a top speed of 209 mph.
Precision handwork down to the last detail characterizes the exclusive Brabus interior design for the two-seater. The company-own upholstery shop specializes in fulfilling just about any request from discriminating SLR owners when it comes to customizing the interior. That includes a multitude of leather types and colors as well as custom upholstery designs.An unusual Brabus specialty is the waffle-patterned leather carpeting in the SLR’s footwells. Some 7,800 meters (25,600 feet) of the finest thread are sewn with utmost precision for it alone.

There have been countless attempts to translate the Ferrari spirit from four wheels to two, ranging from sport bikes to choppers and everything in between. But this is the first we've seen with three wheels. That's right, in case your eyes couldn't adjust from the endless see of crimson contours, what you're looking at is a Ferrari trike.

Mirroring the "styling" of a Scuderia Ferrari F1 car, this one-off trike was spotted at the banzai Tokyo Auto Salon by the same people who brought us the no-less-bonkers Lamborghini ATV. Based around a 1.3-liter Suzuki Hayabusa engine and frame, this (thankfully) unique example was built by Trike Japan in order to showcase what they can do. We certainly hope the rest of their portfolio is a bit more tasteful than this showpiece, but we won't be holding our breath.

The 2009 MINI Convertible drove out of a simulated ice block with a couple made up all frozen-like in the front seats. As for the car, well, it's pretty self explanatory. Available in March, it finally ditches the last-gen engines for the NA and turbocharged 1.6L fours available in the hardtop Cooper and Cooper S. Other changes? The trunk's roomier, the interior gets brought up-to-date, and the rollbar becomes a pop-up unit, significantly improving rearward visibility and giving the Cooper a much cleaner top-down profile.

The more approachable one (at least in terms of a high-end Ferrari fare) is the rumored 599 HGTE. Details are scarce on what comprises the Handling GT Evoluzione package at the moment, but the promise is that it will take the already accomplished GT to the next level.

Perhaps the more interesting car will be the 599XX. This model will apparently only be available to select clients – in other words, those with a long history of Ferrari ownership. Like the existing FXX version of the Enzo, the 599XX will be a rolling laboratory that incorporates technology that Ferrari engineers have been developing on both road and track cars. At this point, Ferrari isn't saying how many of these cars will be available – or what they will cost – but we expect for them to make the standard 599 look quite affordable by comparison.
